Getting to Volos

Volos sits on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of Mount Pelion. KTEL Magnesia gives the distances as about 320 km north of Athens and 219 km south of Thessaloniki. The Sporades boats do not leave from Piraeus, so you first need to reach Volos.

1. KTEL Magnesia bus

  • KTEL Magnesia runs daily intercity buses from Volos to Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa and other cities.
  • In Athens its buses use the Liosion intercity bus station (Rikaki 6), not Kifissos: phone +30 210 8329585.
  • In Thessaloniki: KTEL Magnesia station at Giannitson 244, +30 2310 595424.
  • Volos bus station: Sekeri & Zachou streets; information and bookings +30 24210 33254 and +30 24210 25527.

2. From Athens Airport

Athens International Airport lists the X93 express bus to the Kifissos and Liosion intercity bus stations; for Volos you want Liosion. The airport's Suburban Railway also runs to Athens (Larissis) station, where you can change to trains leaving Athens. X93 tickets and real-time information: OASA (11185).

3. By train

Hellenic Train runs Athens–Larissa trains. On the Larissa–Volos section, Hellenic Train currently runs buses instead of trains, so plan for a change at Larissa. Its Larissa–Volos timetable is a download on the page linked below.

4. Volos airport and car

KTEL Magnesia also runs buses between Volos and the state airport at Nea Anchialos. Drivers can leave a car in the pier car park run by the port (+30 24210 76579) or take it on a ferry that carries vehicles (book it with your ticket).

Pre-booked transfer

A private transfer to Volos port skips the bus change, which helps with luggage or an early sailing. Ask for drop-off at the central pier (Kentriki Provlita).

Bus and train times are not listed here. Check KTEL Magnesia and Hellenic Train on the day you travel.
